Hello! We are volunteers on Innovate’s Restore The Thaw Project. We are interested in preserving nature and habitats. This means helping the plants and animals.

A hazel dormouse

Today, we have been helping dormice near Cowbridge. Dormice are a type of mouse we have here in Wales. They love to live in hazel trees and to eat hazelnuts!

There aren’t many dormice left in Wales. There are fewer and fewer trees for them to make their homes in. They don’t have many places left where they can live. They need us to help them.

We have been putting up two types of dormouse boxes. These will make good homes for the dormice. This will help them. Hopefully more will live in Wales because of this. It’s important to look after dormice.

We made sure that the dormouse boxes were put in good, safe places. We made sure they were secure when we attached them to the trees. It took three of us to do this! Teamwork helps a lot when you’re volunteering.

We want to go back there in the summer to look in the dormouse houses. Hopefully we will find some living in there.
